BAS Agent

As of March 1st 2010 the ATO regulated the bookkeeping industry. Now, all bookkeepers providing BAS services for a fee or other reward are required by law to be registered as a BAS Agent.
To obtain and maintain BAS Agent registration, the following must be met:Minimum Certificate IV in Financial Services – Bookkeeping or Accounting
Member of a recognised Professional Association
Over 1,000 hours of relevant experience
Professional Indemnity insurance
Ongoing Professional Development
 Why is this important?In the past, a bookkeeper was able to complete a short MYOB or Quickbooks course and start charging for their services. Unfortunately, this would often lead to a mess due to the bookkeeper’s lack of experience and inadequate training. As a Registered BAS Service Provider, you can have confidence that your bookwork is being carried out by experienced and qualified bookkeepers.
Professional Code of ConductBAS Agents are bound by a Professional Code of Conduct in relation to:Honesty and integrity
Independence (acting in our Client’s best interest)
Confidentiality
Competence
Breach of this Code of Conduct can result in serious penalties including termination of registration and Civil penalties involving fines up to $137,500.00
